They are a very playful breed having a great amount of energy in it. They are also quite efficient in taking the roles of hunting dogs, as they have a keen sense of smell and sight.

Although Ibizan hounds are a sturdy breed, it can also acquire certain diseases that need to be treated by experienced vets. Some of the diseases that affect the Ibizan hound are osteochondritis dissecans disease, von Willebrands disease and hypothyroidism. The hound is also found to be allergic to certain kinds of drugs, flea powders and insecticides.

There have been cases where the Ibizan hound has been found to have collie eye anomaly. This may cause blindness in the dogs. However, since it is a genetic condition rather than a disease if the parents of the dog do not have the anomaly, then the hound will be safe from this it.

The disease osteochondritis dissecans tend to damage the cartilage of the Ibizan hound thereby causing degeneration of the joints. This disease is aggravated by over nutrition and a fast growth in the dog.

As the Ibizan hound is a highly energetic dog and indulges in a lot of physical activity, there are many instances of the hounds having cuts on their body. If the hound is affected by von Willebrands disease, these cuts may turn out to be very dangerous. With this disease, the blood fails to clot and so even a minor injury would result in a large loss of blood.

There are several other diseases that are found to affect the Ibizan hounds, some of which are even life threatening. Regular checkups with the local vet are very necessary to assure that any one of these diseases does not affect the Ibizan hound.
